African American people have come a long way from the illiterate slaves, who were once picking cotton in fields, to powerful political leaders. A prime example would be President Barack Obama, the first African American president of the United States of America. But first we must ask ourselves, how did this occur? Who lead African Americans to better living standards? Civil rights leaders, such as Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, and Rosa Parks, just to name a few. However, among these great names in history, there is one that stands out, and that man is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King gave hope to those in need with his awe inspiring sermons he performed at the church his grandfather founded. They would later have four children: Yolanda, Martin Luther King III, Dexter Scott, and Bernice (Bio.com). Rosa Park on December 1, 195 5, boarded the Cleveland Avenue bus to return home after her work day. She refused to give up her seat to white passengers after the whites-only section had filled. She was arrested and was proven guilty of breaking the Montgomery City code. The trial took thirty minutes, and she was forced to pay ten dollars in fines and four dollars in court fees. The leader of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), E.D. Nixon, met with Dr. King to discuss a matter of course, to boycott the transportation company. The protest lasted 382 days, in which, the African American community refused to use the public bus system. Due to this the company lost many of its profits, due to the black community being the majority who patronized the company, plus a series of laws caused the city of Montgomery to lift the segregated bussing laws (Spartacus Educational). Dr. King partnered with local ministers, notably Ralph Abernathy, and formed the Southern Christian Leaders hip Conference in January 1957(Clark, Carrasquel).
